Busting the Mobile Charge Myth

Plenty of callers still assume 0800 numbers cost money from a mobile. That was once the case, but the rules have since changed.

Before 2015

Back then the mobile networks (EE, O2, Vodafone, etc.) could bill as much as 40p per minute for an 0800 call. Only landline users got them for free.

After July 2015

Ofcom UK Wide Change: the law turned every 0800 and 0808 number free to dial from ALL mobiles and landlines. Not a single penny leaves your account.

Dialling 0800 Numbers from Outside the UK

An 0800 number is a "Non-Geographic" UK line. It was never built to ring from beyond UK borders. So if you sit in the USA, Europe, or Asia, punching in 0800 123 4567 normally leads nowhere.

How to Get Through:

  • Attempt +44 800... by dropping the first zero.
  • See whether the business lists a standard geographic line (01 or 02).
  • Use Intercalling: our in-browser dialer links you up at cheap per minute rates, just as though you were in the UK.

Heads Up: International Charges

Should your +44 800 call actually go through from overseas, it is NOT free. Your home carrier still applies its usual international calling rates.

What 0800 Numbers Do for Businesses

175% More Calls

Research finds people are 175% more inclined to ring a sales line when the call costs them nothing.

A National Image

Come across as a nationwide operation rather than a small shop tied to one local area code.

0500 Is Gone

The legacy 0500 freephone range was scrapped in 2017, leaving 0800 as the standard today.

Questions We Hear Often

Will calling 0800 eat into my mobile minutes?

It will not. 0800 calls are free and never draw down the monthly minute allowance on a UK mobile contract.

Is there any difference between 0800 and 0808?

Not where price is concerned. Both count as UK 'Freephone' prefixes and ring free from every phone.

So who actually foots the bill?

The business that answers covers a per-minute charge to its telecoms provider, which is exactly why the call stays free for you.
