Dialing a UK Mobile the Right Way

The usual slip is leaving the leading zero in place. The correct layout is set out below.

International Format

Domestic (Inside UK)
07700 900123
International (Outside UK)
+44 7700 900123
Remove the first zero and put +44 in front.

Step 1: Exit Code

Enter the exit code for wherever you are (011 for US, 00 for Europe), or press and hold '0' to produce the '+' sign on a mobile.

Step 2: Country Code

Now enter 44. That is the country code assigned to the United Kingdom.

Step 3: Mobile Number

Type the mobile number, leaving out the first '0'. UK mobile numbers run to 10 digits once that 0 is removed.

The Usual Mobile Prefixes

Because customers can carry a number between providers, the network is never guaranteed, yet here is how these blocks were first handed out:

077
O2 / Vodafone
078
Vodafone / O2
079
EE (Orange/T-Mobile)
074
Three / MVNOs
075
Three / O2
073
EE / Three

Watch Out for 070

Not every 07 number is a mobile. Anything beginning with 070 is a "Personal Number". Fraudsters lean on them because they pass for mobiles yet charge far more per minute.

077, 078, 079...Real Mobile
070...Premium / Personal

Glance at the second digit first. When it is a 0 (for instance 070), tread carefully.

Calling United Kingdom: what to know

United Kingdom answers on the country code +44, with the capital in London and most business concentrated around London, Manchester and Birmingham. The working language for business is English, and local offices generally keep hours of 9:00 to 17:30 typical. Pub-and-lunch culture clusters meetings 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 16:30.

Outbound calls on Intercalling need no phone number and no app. You place them from the browser, and you only add a US or Canada number when you also want to receive inbound calls.

Most mobiles in United Kingdom sit on operators such as EE (BT Group), O2 (Virgin Media O2), Vodafone UK. 070 numbers look like UK mobiles but are 'personal numbers' that can cost the caller £0.50/minute or more, they're not real mobile lines.

United Kingdom runs on UTC, and it shifts for daylight saving, so confirm the current difference before an early or late call.
