Dialing a UK Mobile the Right Way
The usual slip is leaving the leading zero in place. The correct layout is set out below.
International Format
Step 1: Exit Code
Enter the exit code for wherever you are (011 for US, 00 for Europe), or press and hold '0' to produce the '+' sign on a mobile.
Step 2: Country Code
Now enter 44. That is the country code assigned to the United Kingdom.
Step 3: Mobile Number
Type the mobile number, leaving out the first '0'. UK mobile numbers run to 10 digits once that 0 is removed.
The Usual Mobile Prefixes
Because customers can carry a number between providers, the network is never guaranteed, yet here is how these blocks were first handed out:
Watch Out for 070
Not every 07 number is a mobile. Anything beginning with 070 is a "Personal Number". Fraudsters lean on them because they pass for mobiles yet charge far more per minute.
Glance at the second digit first. When it is a 0 (for instance 070), tread carefully.
