Questions, Answered
Is +44 the same thing as 0044?
Yes, they point to the same place. The '+' is the worldwide international prefix used on mobiles, and '00' is the exit code many countries use, though the USA does not. From the USA you dial 011 44, which works out to the same as +44.
Why is the London code sometimes written 0207 or 0208?
London's real area code is simply 020. That next digit (7, 8, 3, and so on) actually belongs to the local number, even though people tend to bundle it in out of habit. From the US, dial +44 20 and then the rest of the number.
What does it cost to call a UK mobile from the USA?
With traditional carriers, UK mobiles usually cost more than landlines. Intercalling, by contrast, charges very low per minute rates to UK mobile numbers (O2, EE, Vodafone, Three), well under what AT&T or Verizon ask.
Should I dial a 1 before the number?
No. The '1' is the country code for the USA and Canada. To reach the UK you use '44' instead, so never put a 1 in front of 44.
