How to make overseas calls from Singapore

In short

To make overseas calls from Singapore, dial the exit code 000 or 001, then the country code and the number, or just use the plus sign. With Intercalling you skip the exit code entirely. Open the browser, type the plus sign, the country code and the number, and tap call. The first call is free.

The exit code and the easy way around it

On a normal Singapore line, an overseas call starts with the international exit code. The common ones are 000 and 001, and some providers also have their own variants. After the exit code you dial the country code, then the area code without its leading zero, then the number. It is easy to fumble the sequence, and the international rate on a regular line is often steep.

With Intercalling you do not need the exit code at all. The browser tab connects straight to the worldwide phone network, so you just type the plus sign, the country code and the number. It works the same on a laptop and on your phone, with no app to install and no number of your own needed to place a call.

What the plus sign actually does

The plus sign is a universal stand in for whatever exit code a country uses. In Singapore that exit code is 000 or 001, in the USA it is 011, and elsewhere it is something else again. When you save a number with a plus sign in front, your phone or the dialler swaps in the right exit code automatically, so the same saved number works from any country.

This is why Intercalling asks only for the plus sign, the country code and the number. There is nothing local to remember. A number that starts +91 will reach India whether you are in Singapore, Malaysia or anywhere with an internet connection, because the plus sign carries the international meaning by itself.

Step by step for your first overseas call

Open Intercalling in any browser and create an account with Google or your email in under a minute. Allow microphone access when the browser asks, since the call uses your device audio.

Type the plus sign, the destination country code and the full number. For example, use +91 for India, +60 for Malaysia and +1 for the USA. Tap the green button and the call connects in a few seconds with clear voice. The person you reach needs no app, no SIM and no account.

How a browser call reaches a normal phone

The call leaves your browser over your internet connection using WebRTC, the same voice technology built into Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox. It then hands off to the ordinary telephone network, which is why the person on the other end answers a normal ringing phone rather than an app.

Because the audio travels over the internet rather than the mobile network, distance does not change the experience and there is no roaming charge if you travel. You need only a stable wifi or mobile data connection, and the quality usually holds up well even on a modest connection.

What it costs and how billing works

Billing is per minute, with no monthly plan and no lock in. Calling a mobile in India runs about $0.153 per minute, a number in the USA is about $0.046 per minute flat, and Malaysia is about $0.244 per minute to a mobile. A small $0.004 connection fee applies per call.

Your credit never expires, so you can top up a small amount and use it whenever you like. The first call is free and we do not ask for a card to try, which lets you check the voice quality before you add any credit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to dial 000 or 001 from Singapore?+

Not with Intercalling. You only use the plus sign, the country code and the number. The exit codes 000 and 001 are needed only for overseas calls made on a regular phone line.

Does it work on my phone or only on a computer?+

Both. Intercalling runs in the browser on your phone and your computer, in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox, with nothing to download.

Do I need a phone number to make overseas calls?+

No, not to place calls. You can call any country without a number of your own. A US or Canada digital number, about $2.14 to $5 a month, is only needed if you want to receive calls in the browser.

Is the first call really free?+

Yes. Every new account gets one free call so you can test the voice quality, with no card required.

What does the plus sign do?+

The plus sign stands in for the exit code, so it replaces 000 or 001. A number saved with a plus sign works from any country, which is why Intercalling only needs the plus sign, the country code and the number.

Is there a roaming charge if I travel?+

No. The call goes over your internet connection rather than the mobile network, so there is no roaming charge wherever you are. You pay only the per minute rate plus the small connection fee.
