How to Avoid Roaming Charges in Mexico

A few simple moves keep roaming switched off and your costs down to a clear per minute rate while you travel in Mexico.

1

Call Over Wi Fi From the Browser

Hop onto hotel, cafe, or public Wi Fi and dial out straight from your browser with Intercalling. You pay only the per minute rate and your SIM stays untouched.

2

Add a Mexican Virtual Number

Pick up local calls in the browser for a small monthly fee and no roaming. Virtual numbers run over the internet, so your mobile plan never switches on.

3

Switch Off Data Roaming

Turn cellular roaming off to dodge surprise fees, then lean on Wi Fi or an eSIM for data while your calls run through the browser.

A Quick Setup That Pays Off

Travelers and remote teams can be ready in minutes. Turn roaming off, add a Mexican virtual number if you want, and ring local businesses and coworkers from hotel Wi Fi at a per minute rate instead of burning cellular minutes.

Calling Mexico: what to know

Mexico answers on the country code +52, with the capital in Mexico City and most business concentrated around Mexico City (CDMX), Guadalajara and Monterrey. The working language for business is Spanish, and local offices generally keep hours of 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 in many cities, the long lunch is real, and small businesses close entirely between 14:00 and 16:00.

Outbound calls on Intercalling need no phone number and no app. You place them from the browser, and you only add a US or Canada number when you also want to receive inbound calls.

Most mobiles in Mexico sit on operators such as Telcel, AT&T México, Movistar México. Mexico dropped the '1' mobile prefix after October 2019 reform, '+52 55…' now works for mobiles where '+52 1 55…' used to be required, but some legacy international gateways still need the '1'.

Mexico runs on UTC minus 6, and it does not observe daylight saving, so the time difference stays constant through the year.
